Going to OFC/NFOEC? Plan to visit the Ethernet Alliance in booths #1253 and #2108.

At OFC/NFOEC 2011, the Ethernet Alliance is showcasing a live demonstration of some of the latest products developed for use in next generation data centers.  A live network will transport 100G traffic over an all-optical link, 40G and 10G traffic over both optical and copper links, and RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) traffic through the network.  There will also be a static demo of storage over Ethernet equipment, test equipment, components, cables and connectors that are part of the Ethernet technology family being deployed into data centers and high performance computing environments.

In addition, Ethernet Alliance member participants will also be holding intimate “Ask the Experts” Question and Answer sessions where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions on a variety of Ethernet-related topics as well as hosting panel sessions.

Panel Information:

The first panel will be on The Future of Higher Speed Ethernet and moderated by Charles Seifert, Ixia

Description:
Traffic demand in the network backbone continues to grow rapidly, driven by a number of popular applications such as IPTV, video-on-demand services, remote storage, IP data transit, mobile broadband services, VPN services, peer-to-peer streaming, etc.  While each application on its own has small impact, the cumulative effect of the growth in both use and application bandwidth requirements is having a huge impact.  This panel participants will discuss the capacity strain felt in these core networking and data centers and how higher speed ethernet technologies are meeting the need.

The secon panel will address Converging on Ethernet – New Storage Technologies for Greater IT Efficiency and Flexibility and be moderated by Jason Blosil, NetApp

Description:
Virtualization is increasing the requirement and opportunity to share more of the data center infrastructure.  Enhancements to Ethernet enable the converging of FC SANs to a common network technology with Data Center Bridging (DCB). Combined with storage virtualization, virtualization and enhanced Ethernet deliver new opportunities for increased efficiency and flexibility to address today’s and tomorrow’s IT challenges.

Stay tuned for more information, details and news.

The Ethernet Alliance Forms the Next Generation Enterprise Cabling

The Ethernet Alliance’s newest subcommittee held its first December 17th, 21010 and voted in Frank Yang of CommScope as the subcommittee marketing chair and Brad Booth of AppliedMicro as the subcommittee technical chair. During their second meeting, on January 7th,the subcommittee had a lively discussion on the scope and goals for the subcommittee.  The initial focus will be on the data center and the organization hopes to assist the newly formed IEEE 802.3 100G backplane and copper cabling study group with their efforts.  Long term goals will be to look to future applications and deployment trends to develop collateral for Ethernet Alliance members and others to utilize for the development of future standards.
